COOPERATIONS - Aktuelle Expos

Provided that a discourse about the topic of art & disability takes place at all, the following positions are articulated frequently:

• Art is art - whether somebody is disabled or not. No link should be drawn between the authors and their disability. At best, support should be given to artists with disability when promoting their perception by the general cultural scene.

• The biography of artists is essential. Disability is not only an authentic part of a biography, it is also a decisive component of the artistic work. Frida Kahlo is a good example and demonstrates the particular quality of the experience of disability.

However, disability is a relevant factor in the life of the artists of this exhibition project. One could compare its visibility to other defining factors, such as gender or ethnic origin. While there are works in which these biographical aspects are clearly perceptible, gender or the ethnic origin of the authors hardly matter in other works. Art and disability is as multifaceted a subject as the artists who operate in this field.
